The 30-year-old golfer demonstrated exceptional composure to claim the prestigious Abu Dhabi title on Sunday, defeating his compatriot in a tense playoff following a rollercoaster last day of play.
The Englishman nailed a crucial birdie from just over eight foot to seal the win, echoing his only previous tournament success at the 2020 Scottish Open, which was also a play-off victory over the same opponent.
The champion entered the last day with a single stroke lead over fellow Englishman Fleetwood and Denmark’s Nicolai Højgaard. He ended up with a total score of twenty-under after a topsy-turvy, 67 final round that featured seven birdie putts and a pair of bogeys.
Fleetwood moved a stroke ahead with the 16th and 17th remaining after a birdie on the 16th, but Rai pulled level again on the seventeenth and then missed a ten-foot birdie putt to claim victory on the last hole.
This set up a play-off at the Yas Links course where the eventual winner triumphed to take the title and $1.5m (£1.13m) in winnings.
{“Tommy is a world-class player and an even better individual. To compete alongside him the last two days was truly memorable,” stated the winner, the present world No 30. “You’re so focused on playing the round and staying in the zone, it’s difficult to put into words at the moment how it is. It is incredible to be holding the trophy.”
The Northern Irish star found himself a bit too far to make up, coming up one shot behind in a shared third place with Højgaard, after a stunning 62 final round of ten-under. It was his best-ever score on the DP World Tour, including eight birdie putts and one eagle.
The Danish golfer carded six birdie putts of his as well, but his hopes of leading the standings were dented by a dropped shot on the 12th. England’s Mansell produced an excellent final-round seven-under to finish tied for fifth with Australian Hillier.
