The US region famous for its historical past, maple syrup and bitterly cold, snow-bound winters is undergoing a dramatic change. A recent study shows that New England is warming more quickly than nearly any other place on the Earth.
The velocity of warming in New England makes it the fastest-heating area of the continental United States, as per the study. The pace of its warming has apparently accelerated significantly in the last half-decade.
"The temperature is not only rising, it's accelerating," stated a primary researcher on the project. "It's really sped up in recent years, which surprised me. Our regional climate is shifting in a different trajectory, after being relatively stable for millennia."
The analysis places the New England region among the fastest-warming zones in the world, together with the Arctic and sections of Europe and China. "The region is now heading towards being like the American South," the scientist added.
For the analysis, researchers examined multiple data sources on daily temperature extremes and snowpack dating back to 1900. The analysis encompassed the six states of Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Connecticut.
They found that New England has warmed by an mean of 2.5°C (4.5°F) from 1900 to 2024. This far exceeds the worldwide mean, with the planet warming by approximately 1.3°C in the same period.
"That is extremely rapid heating, which is concerning," said the researcher.
A major cause for this exceptional accumulation of heat may be shifts in the North Atlantic. The global seas are taking in the vast majority of the excess heat trapped by emissions.
In the region near New England, an increase of cold, fresh water from Greenland’s melting glaciers is slowing down the Gulf Stream. This is pushing heated ocean water into the coastal waters, congregating heat along the shoreline that is then pushed further inland by prevailing winds.
"The excess heat from global warming is being held in the oceans like a massive battery," explained the researcher. "This is now being released into the atmosphere and New England is a recipient of that energy."
Once seen as a mild climate haven, New England has experienced severe climate events in the past decade, including enormous flooding and extended drought.
The increasing temperatures poses a threat to cherished aspects of local culture:
"I live just outside Boston and when I moved here in the 1990s I used to ice skate on the local ponds regularly," recalled the researcher. "That tradition has largely vanished from large parts of southern New England."
