An iconic tropical holiday destination situated within the Great Barrier Reef has entered into an agreement for sale to a US-based private equity firm in a deal reportedly valued at 1.2 billion Australian dollars.

Headquartered in New York, Blackstone – the owner of the hospitality group Crown Resorts – announced it had entered into an deal to purchase the island resort from the Oatley family, pending customary regulatory approvals.

The family issued a comment noting they welcomed the change in ownership of an island that holds a “unique position in the affections of countless Australians” and is referred to as “Australia’s Tropical Island”.

Positioned roughly 900 kilometers north of Brisbane and approximately 500 kilometers south of Cairns, the island spans more than 1,130 hectares spanning two separate islands.

Approximately 30% of the area is built upon, including a substantial array of facilities:

• Twenty shops and retail spaces
