Former Treasury Secretary Summers Resigns from AI Company's Directors

Board Resignation
The economist declared he would withdraw from public duties after legislative body released his frequent correspondence with Jeffrey Epstein

Former US treasury secretary Lawrence Summers is departing from the board at the ChatGPT creator, just days after a batch of digital correspondence between him and deceased financier the accused trafficker became publicly available.

Summers stated in an announcement that he was "thankful for the privilege to have served, enthusiastic about the prospects of the enterprise, and eagerly await tracking their advancement".

Summers, who previously headed the Ivy League institution, stated on earlier this week that he would be stepping back from public responsibilities due to his relationship with Epstein.

Email Communications

The recently released communications revealed that the official corresponded with Jeffrey Epstein until the 24 hours preceding the financier's 2019 detention for alleged sex trafficking of minors.

In another announcement, the artificial intelligence company stated it respected Summers' decision to step down.

"We value his many contributions and the insight he offered to the Board," the company remarked.

Political Context

This announcement follows after the two houses of the US legislature voted on Tuesday to approve a legislation that would mandate the US justice department to make public its records on the case.

The legislation will afterward proceed to the desk of US President Donald Trump for endorsement. Trump has indicated he intends to sign the measure, after modifying his stance on the matter following objections from his base.

Message Details

A batch of Epstein-related correspondence disclosed by the legislative panel days ago referenced multiple well-known personalities in the Epstein's past associates, without suggesting any illegal behavior by those individuals.

The communications revealed that Summers and the financier regularly had dinners together, with the billionaire often attempting to introduce the official to prominent global figures.

Personal Response

After the emails were shared with the public, the former official stated he accepted "total ownership for my poor judgment to persist in communicating with Jeffrey Epstein".

He continued that he desired "to reestablish faith and fix relationships with the persons nearest to me".

Previous Positions

Summers occupied high-level positions under party leaders; serving as Treasury chief under Bill Clinton, and as leader of the economic advisory body under the former leader.

He led Harvard from five years and remains a faculty member there. When declaring his departure from public roles previously on Monday, he stated he would continue his academic responsibilities.

Further Repercussions

Following his declaration on earlier this week, the Center for American Progress, a left-leaning policy institute in the capital where the professor was a prominent member, verified that he was not associated with the group.

He became part of the board of the technology firm, which creates ChatGPT, in last year - following a unsuccessful effort to remove its top executive Sam Altman.
